What Card Do I Need?

There are a number of Health and Safety cards that a construction worker can apply for. Depending on your trade or position, you may be required to take a specialist test or a manager's professionals test See below for more information on what test you should be applying for


CSCS Red Card (Trainee Card)

This CSCS card is suitable for trainees who are registered for a qualification that will lead them to acquiring a CSCS Skilled Worker card (in the majority of cases this qualification is a NVQ/SVQ). Please note: SSSTS, SMSTS and NEBOSH General will not be accepted as routes to a Trainee card.

The card is valid for five years and can not be renewed.

Before you apply for the Trainee card, applicants must have completed the appropriate CITB Hralth, Safety and Environment Test.

*Important note: Applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their qualification. As a minimum, you are required to provide evidence from your training provider’s awarding body that includes:

  • Applicants Name
  • Full qualification title and level of the course you are registered to
  • Date of registration (must be in the last 2 years)

CSCS Red Card (Experienced Worker)

This CSCS Experienced Worker Card is available to individuals with on the job experience (normally at least one years’ experience within the last three years).

The card is valid for one year and cannot be renewed.  It is issued to candidates on a temporary basis, while they achieve a Construction Related QCF qualification.

It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ Level 2 or higher.

An Experienced Worker Card cannot be replaced by a Provisional card.

All applicants must have passed the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test within the past two years and be registered for the relevant Construction Related NVQ or SVQ.

Important note: Applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their qualification. As a minimum, you are required to provide evidence from your training provider’s awarding organisation that includes:

  • Applicants Name
  • Full qualification title and level of the course you are registered to
  • Date of registration (must be in the last 2 years)

CSCS Gold Card (Advanced Craft)

The Advanced Craft card is available to individuals who have one of the following;

• Achieved a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ level 3
• Completed an approved indentured apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC etc.)
• Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test.

This card is valid for five years.


CSCS Professionally Qualified Person Card (White with Yellow Stripe)

The Professionally Qualified Person Card is suitable for competence assessed members of CSCS approved Professional Bodies.

Applicants will need to supply proof that they are a current member of the professional body, by providing one of the following, which must note expiry date;

• A membership certificate
• A membership card (both sides)
• An up-to-date letter or email from the professional body

For renewals, applicants must supply a letter or email from the professional body confirming that they are still a member of the organisation.

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.

This card is valid for five years.


CSCS Green Card (Labourer)

Card Requirements

You can apply for the CSCS Green Labourer Card if you have completed the following;

• QCF Level 1/SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction
• Environment or SCQF Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate.

You must pass the CITB Health, safety and environment test within the last 2 years to be eligible for this card.

This only needs to be completed once as both of these lifetime qualifications.

The labourer card is valid for five years.


CSCS Blue Card (Skilled Worker)

You are able to apply for the CSCS Skilled Worker Card if you have either:

Achieved a construction related NVQ or SVQ level 2
OR
Completed an apprenticeship, such as an Employer sponsored apprenticeship, a City and Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate or a CSCS Approved Trailblazer

If you do not have these qualifications, but have experience through your job and have registered for a qualification applicable to your occupation, you may apply for an Experienced Worker Card.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test

This card is valid for five years.


CSCS Manager Card (Black)

This Manager card is suitable for managers or candidates with technical occupations have achieved the following;

• A relevant Construction Management/Technical related NVQ/SVQ level 4, 5, 6 or 7

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety & Environmental Tests.

This card is valid for five years.


CSCS Supervisor Card (Gold)

This CSCS Supervisor card is suitable for supervisors or candidates with technical occupations who are eligible to apply for this card if they achieve a Construction Related Supervisory/Technical NVQ or SVQ level 3 or 4

All applicants must pass the Supervisors CITB Health, Safety & Environmental Tests.    

This card is valid for five years.


CSCS Academically Qualified Person Card (White with Yellow Stripe)

This Academically Qualified Person Card is suitable to individulas who have completed certain construction related degrees, HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates and NEBOSH diplomas. 

 To apply for the card, applicants will need to supply a copy of their qualification and where possible evidence of the units achieved within the qualification.

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test

This card is valid for five years.
