What Card Do I Need?

There are a number of Health and Safety cards that a construction worker can apply for. Depending on your trade or position, you may be required to take a specialist test or a manager's professionals test See below for more information on what test you should be applying for


RED CSCS CARD - EXPERIENCED TECHNICIAN, SUPERVISOR OR MANAGER

This card is available to Supervisors and Managers that do not hold an NVQ or SVQ level 3,4 or 5 and are not a member of an approved Professional Body. However, they will have relevant on site experience.

Valid for: This is a non-renewable card that is only valid for three years and will only be issued on a temporary basis until the applicant, studying towards a NVQ or SVQ, has achieved the qualification. 

What test do I book? All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test. Construction Professionals in a Supervisory role should take the Supervisors test. Managers should take the Manager and Professionals Test.

 


RED CSCS CARD - PROVISIONAL

The Provisional CSCS Card is available to workers who are undergoing a probationary period with their employer or working under supervision as labourer and has yet to complete recognised qualification within the construction industry.

Valid for: The card has an expiry date of only 6 months and is non renewable. 

What test do I book? To acquire a Provisional CSCS Card all applicants must pass the CITB Health Safety & Environment test. Provisional cardholders must be registered for a construction related qualification before the cards expiry date and then apply for a CSCS card that relates to their trade.

 


RED CSCS CARD- APPRENTICE

The Apprentice CSCS Card is available to all apprentices in the construction industry who are actively registered on a recognised apprenticeship framework.

Valid for: This card is valid for four years and is non renewable.

What test do I book? Applicants should take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. Please note that if you have met the health and safety requirements of your Apprentice Managing Agency, you will not need to take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. 

 


RED CSCS CARD- TRAINEE (CRAFT AND OPERATIVE)

The Trainee CSCS Card is available to trainees and have registered and working towards achieving an NVQ or SVQ.

Valid for: This Trainee CSCS card is valid for three years and is non renewable.

What test do I book? All Trainee CSCS Card holders must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, or have attend a one day Health and Safety Awareness Course as a part of their training. 

 


RED CSCS CARD- TRAINEE (TECHNICAL, SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT)

If an applicant is undertaking a higher education course for a nationally recognised qualification within the construction industry at a university or college, they will be able to apply for a Trainee CSCS Card.

Valid for: The Trainee CSCS card is valid for three years and can be renewed for an additional three years on application.

What test do I book? All Trainee CSCS Card holders must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. 

 


RED CSCS CARD - EXPERIENCED WORKER

This card is available to any person with experience of working on site that has missed an industry accreditation opportunity.

Valid for: The Experienced Worker CSCS card is valid for one year, is non-renewable and issued on a temporary basis. The natural progression will be to replace this card with a skilled five year card on achievement of NVQ or SVQ Level 3 or higher.

What test do I book? To acquire a Experienced Worker CSCS Card all applicants must pass the CITB Health Safety & Environment test. Before applying for this card please check to see if your trade or job role is covered by CSCS.

 


GREEN CSCS CARD - LABOURER

The traditional Green (CSO) Card is no longer available to labourers and has been replaced by a new Labourer Green Card.

Labourers can apply for this card if they have passed the QCF Level One or SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment.

Valid for: This card is valid for five years.

What test do I book? To acquire a Green Labour CSCS Card all applicants must pass the Operatives CITB Health Safety & Environment test.

 


BLUE CSCS CARD - CRAFT UNIT LEVEL

The Craft Unit Level card is available for workers in occupations where a full Construction Related NVQ or SVQ does not exist. However the worker must have passed trade specific units.

Valid for: This card is valid for five years.

What test do I book? To acquire a Provisional CSCS Card all applicants must pass the CITB Health Safety & Environment test. 

 


BLUE CSCS CARD - SKILLED WORKER

The Skilled Worker Card (Blue Card) is available to skilled workers who have achieved a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ level 2. Alternatively you may have completed an approved apprenticeship and awarded a City and Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate.

If you do not have these qualifications, but you are experienced in your job you may apply for an Experienced Worker Card.

Valid for: The Blue CSCS card is valid for five years.

What test do I book? All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test

 


BLACK CSCS CARD - MANAGER

The Black Card has replaced the ‘Platinum Card’. This card is available for construction managers who have achieved of a Construction related NVQ/SVQ certificate (Levels 4, 5) in a relevant occupation, or a construction related QCF Level 6 or 7.

Valid for: This card is valid for five years.

What test do I book? To acquire a Manager CSCS Card all applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.

 


GOLD CSCS CARD - ADVANCED CRAFT/ SUPERVISORY

To obtain a gold skilled card if you will have achieved an NVQ or SVQ level 3. Alternatively you may have completed an approved apprenticeship and was awarded a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

If you do not have these qualifications, you may apply for a skilled card if you are experienced in your job (see Experienced Worker Card for more information).

Valid for: The Gold CSCS card is valid for 5 years.

What test do I book? To acquire an Advanced Craft/ Supervisory CSCS Card all applicants must pass the CITB Health Safety & Environment test. Applicants should choose the Operative test or Specialist test, depending the nature of your occupation. Construction Professionals in a Supervisory role should take the Supervisors test. 

 

 


WHITE/ GREY CSCS CARD - CONSTRUCTION RELATED OCCUPATION

The CRO card is available to workers in construction related occupations that are not covered by any of the other card categories.

Valid for: This card is valid for 5 years

What test do I book?To acquire a CRO CSCS Card all applicants must pass the CITB Health Safety & Environment test. 

 


WHITE/ YELLOW CSCS CARD - PROFESSIONALLY QUALIFIED PERSON

The Professionally Qualified Person CSCS Card is for competence assessed members of CSCS approved Professional Body (ICE, CIOB, RICS and others).

Valid for: This card is valid for five years. 

What test do I book? To acquire a Professionally Qualified CSCS Card all applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test. 

 

 


YELLOW CSCS CARD - ESCORTED SITE VISITOR

This Yellow card is available to people that visit construction sites on a regular basis, but have no construction specific skill.

Valid for: The Escorted Site Visitor Card is valid for five years.

What test do I book?All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test.

Please note that the issue of this card will not relieve the site managers from their legal obligation to ensure the health, safety and welfare of people entering their sites.
